Course objectives

Lecture gives basic orientation in historical balkanistics. It defines the subject of its studies; adumbrate the Balkan history giving a survey in contemporary state of Czech balkanistics as well as basic scientific working places. It outlines Balkans interpreting the concepts of Balkan nationals, history of name Balkans as well as Balkan stereotypes. It brings detailed information about the Czech luminaries of the balkanistics starting with Konstantin Jireček and gives survey on basic syncretic theses and historical approaches of particular Balkan historical centers and schools. Nor the disquisition on the religion, being an important phenomenon of Balkan inter-ethnical relations, does not remain aside, and also symbiosis of Christianity and Islam. Practical workshop of basics and methodology of historical task of 6 hours duration is an integral part of the subject. Lecture is completed by excursions into scientific centers of balkanistics situated in Brno and Prague. At the end of this workshop, student would be qualified for basic orientation in historical balkanistics, knowing principles and rules of expert type of historical task.

• 1. Basic information on historical balkanistics – what is the subject matter, when it arose, history of the branch of knowledge; 2. Situation in Czech historical balkanistics, scientific centers, which entered into broader Balkan studies and basic Czech literature; 3. Balkans in concepts of Balkan nations. Stereotypes about Balkans. Name Balkans and its genesis; 4. Byzantine sources. František Dvorník; 5. Konstantin Jireček; 6. Tradition of balkanistics in Brno; 7. Modern synthesis and its authors; 8. –10. Methodology of historical task; 11. Christianity and Islam in Balkans; 12. Excursion into Slovanská knihovna (Slavonic Bibliotheca), archives and into appropriate institutes of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic;

Teaching methods

Subject is outlined as lectures and tutorials (in case of the methodology of historical task). Regular presence is required.

Assessment methods

Excerpt for theoretical knowledge also mastering of basics in historical task performance is tested during the oral exam (proper using of bibliographic quotations, selection of sources and literature, etc.)
