Course objectives
This course is complement to lectures about Czech literature of the first of the 20th century. It is devoted to the most significant authors and issues from the Czech modern (Česká moderna) group to the 40s of the 20th century. The students are led to understanding to literature in its imanent conception as well as in its broader context. It will be focused on the analyses of concrete works while the important thing is to integrate the particular work in the author's writings and literary movement but also in cultural and social context in general. Students will use primary sources, reviews, manifestations and recent secondary literature on subject.
After finishing the course students:
understand to literary development;
are familiar with cultural and social context;
are able to analys particular works;
acquire methods of critical synthesis.
Syllabus
  • Dr. L. Nováková: Seminars will focus on these authors: Otokar Březina, Bohuslav Reynek, Jan Zahradníček, J. Čep, J. Durych, K. and J. Čapek, V. Nezval, K, Schulz, E. Hostovský etc. Dr. J. Bednářová: Seminars will focus on the important, classic authors of this period (J. Čapek, K. Čapek, V. Holan, F. Halas, B. Reynek, J. Zahradníček).

Assessment methods
Written/oral exam aimed at testing the student´s insight into the main theories, history and concepts of the discipline.
Assesment: essay, active participation and attendance. The condition for access to the exam is passing the reading discussion. Exam will be based on interpretation of historical development of particular period (to the extent of the textbook Lehár, Jan a kol.: Česká literatura od počátků k dnešku), knowledge of recommended primary literature and analyses of the works read by student.

Note on completion of the course: The seminar is related to the lecture Czech literature of the first half of the 20th century, the whole course is closed by an exam. The condition for access to the exam is the fulfillment of the conditions for closing the seminar. The course is taught annually. Classes take place every week.
