Course objectives
This course is aimed at deepening the knowledge of Czech literature of the first half of the 20th century. An emphasis is put on applying up-to-date results of literary historiography, (both Czech and foreign), on the immanent interpretation of literature and also on the interpretation of literature in the cultural context. Special attention is paid to the phenomena which were problematized or neglected – such as decadence, symbolism, expressionism, Literary group, catholic writers, pragmatism, existencialism, ruralism. Lessons are devoted to individual literary works, personalities, groups and directions and their mutual relationship. Comparatistic views will be applied during interpretations and existing teaching of literary theory will be followed.
Syllabus
  • Doc. Kudrnáč: The seminar is outlined as a complementation of a lecture on 20th century Czech literature. The sessions are devoted to authors and problems of Czech literature in a comparative perspective, in relation to Czech literature of different periods as well as in relation to other literatures. The starting point of the work in the seminar is usually a topic dealt with in a seminar paper. The texts from both primary and secondary literature are chosen so as to complement the list of reading required for the exam. Doc. Kudrnáč: After an introduction to the reference literature of the field, the sessions will be devoted to literary groups of the Czech fin de siecle; the ante-war generation or the "generation of rebels"; the role of the "1914 Almanac"; poetism in its relations to other literary schools; psychological prose of the nineteen thirties and before; drama from the end of the nineteenth century to the nineteen forties; the birth of the Czech literary criticism at the turn of the twentieth century and its further development; the innovative and traditional tendencies in historical prose; important expressionistic authors; the poetic schools of the nineteen thirties and forties.
  • Dr. Bednářová: This seminar is aimed at the extension of general knowledge in literary works written during the years 1890 – 1945 via analyses of particular genres. These will lead to deeper insight into creative methods used by various authors and into the literary-historical context. It will be focused on two specific literary genres of Czech literature: a diary (works by Kafka, Klíma, Deml, Orten, Hanč, Kolář and Zábrana) and a letter (by Šalda, Zeyer, Březina, Palivec, Halas, Hrubín, Čep, Zahradníček and Václav Černý); the specifics and variations of these genres will be observed with regard to various authors and their conceptions. The presentations and supplementary papers will be followed by common thinking about prepared texts. In cases of students' interests, these reflections can be supplied by interpretations of literary works, works of criticism or poetry.
  • Seminars of Dr Balaštík will be primarily aimed at studying avantgarde streams in the Czech literature. An emphasis will be placed on the development of proletarian poetry, poetism and surrealism. Analyses of manifestos and critical receptions will also form a part of the lessons. Seminars of Dr Balaštík will be focused on analysing selected books of poetry that are connected with the development of avantgarde thoughts. Specifically, it will be works of Otakar Theer, S. K. Neumann, J. Wolker, V. Nezval, J. Seifert, K. Biebl, R. Weiner, J. Hora etc.
