Předpoklady
The students should be familiar with basic concepts of generative syntax -- it is enough to have read a basic textbook like Liliane Haegeman's Thinking syntactically, or the textbook by David Adger Core Syntax, or any similar Introduction to Syntax available.

Cíle předmětu
After a basic Intro course, it is usually difficult for students to plunge directly into the current debates about the nature and structure of syntactic theory. The current course selects some of the basic readings of the field, identifies the tensions and tries to orient the students about the basic directions of current research in syntax.

Výukové metody
The plan is that we will read papers that provide diverging views on various issues in syntactic research. Each topic will be discussed over a two-week cycle. Each of you will present one paper during the term (in English -- which constitutes 75 percent of the grade). After we present the papers, we will discuss the pros and cons of various solutions. The plan is that each of you will chose a side to argue for -- and we play out the argument. The remaining 25 percent of the grade is for participation in the discussion.
