Course objectives
The aim of the course is to present elementary information on mother tongue and its interesting aspects in an attractive way, in the extent accessible to all university-educated people, especially to philologists. The series of lectures will be conducted by foremost experts from the Department of |Czech Language, Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University or, as the case may be, by invited guests. Interaction with students will be the focus, as well as reflection of their questions. This is a newly introduced course, modified according to the particular interests of students.
Learning outcomes
Having participated in the course, students will be able to:
- get elementary orientation in issues of synchronic and diachronic description of Czech as a mother tongue(alternatively: as their other/foreign language);
- get elementary orientation in selected linguistic disciplines (e.g. in dialectology, onomastics, computer linguistics, teaching Czech as a foreign language);
- deal with more difficult issues of orthography and language codification, also on the basis of work with recommended sources;
- use relevant sources of information on Czech (traditional as well as electronic ones);
- apply the acquired knowledge and methodology when solving independently a wide scale of assigned micro-tasks;
- notice points of interest in the language of everyday practical communication and to find their explanations.
Syllabus
  • 1. Where does it come from, what are its origins and destinations? Origins and history of Czech, developmental tendencies.
  • 2. Is it unique? Typological characterization of Czech I.
  • 3. Is it unique? Typological characterization of Czech II.
  • 4. Where can it be found and is it the same everywhere? Territorial differentiation of Czech, enclaves abroad.
  • 5. With whom is it in touch? “Ours” and “foreign” or language in the heart of Europe – past and present.
  • 6. Who, how and why treats it? Social and functional differentiation of Czech, diversity of means of expression.
  • 7. Who is guarding it and what is correct? Will knowledge of Standard Czech and orthography become an elite matter? Institutions, language laws, language policy; language correctness, adequacy, theory of standard language; orthographical and language “gadgets”. Where to look for correct forms? Books and journals of codification.

  • 9. What do dictionaries say about it? Czech lexicography yesterday, today and tomorrow.
  • 10. How does it name? – The system of Czech proper names yesterday, today and tomorrow.
  • 11. How is it doing in the world of computers? Computational and corpus processing of Czech
  • 12. Is it difficult for foreigners? Teaching Czech as a foreign language.

Teaching methods
A series of lectures, discussions with students. Students are given minor motivational and testing assignments relating to the individual topics.
Assessment methods
Active participation in lectures and completing the minor assignments relating to the individual topics are necessary to pass the course successfully. The course ends with a colloquium based on a brief written work on a topic selected by students.
