Course objectives

The course follows the lecture Grammar and vocabulary of Czech, Pt. 1 (Gramatika a lexikon češtiny I), in which students will get acquainted with modular approaches towards language. This course will focus on interfaces among the particular modules. At the end of the course, students will be able to explain differences among theoretical approaches with which they will get acquainted in seminars, providing Czech examples.

Syllabus

• 1. Lexicon-syntax interface: grammatical features in the lexicon vs. grammatical features in the syntax, representation of grammatical and lexical morphemes (Distributed Morphology) 2. Syntax-phonology interface: (non-)visibility of syntactic structure in phonology, representation of morphophonological alternations (Lexical Phonology, Distributed Morphology, Stratal OT) 3. Syntax-semantic interface: semantic interpretation of syntactic structure (Nanosyntax)

Teaching methods

The teacher will provide students with information relating to the basic principles of the particular theory and will recommend them relevant sources. This part will be followed by a discussion, including an analysis of specific language data (with the focus on Czech). At the end of the course, students are expected to work up independently a homework, whose topic will be assigned to them.

Assessment methods

Requirements relating to the exam are: 1. to participate actively in discussions (on the basis of studied sources), 2. to prepare the final homework, in which students prove their ability to apply he selected theory on Czech data.
