Course objectives
The aim of the seminar is to provide intensive scholarly training to students who are planning to write their B.A. or M.A. thesis on 19th century Czech literature. The course will focus on revision and extension of the elementary skills gained in courses in literary history and literary theory with emphasis on specific work with primary literature (suitable editions), scholarly literature (books on literary history, monographs, studies in scholarly journals and anthologies), online sources and databases, and other useful tools (editing and revising documents).
At the end of the course, students will be able to prepare a scholarly thesis on 19th century Czech literature. The course will enhance the students’ familiarity with scholarly literature on 19th century literature and consolidate the basic skills needed for writing a scholarly text on 19th century Czech literature.
Syllabus
  • 1. How to interpret a literary text of 19th century Czech literature (possible and suitable methodological approaches to text interpretation) 2. How to choose the topic of your thesis, how to approach it and structure it. 3. Primary literature – suitable editions, critical editions, sources and their availability in libraries and online. 4. Dictionaries, books on literary history, scholarly monographs and methods in literary studies (examples of positivist, humanities, structuralist, Marxist and semiotic argumentation, their pros and cons) 5. Relevant scholarly literature – reliable sources; online databases and recommended bibliographic citation. 6. Editorial revision of text and final proofreading. 7.-12. Presentations of student work – different phases of preparation of students’ own scholarly text.
