Course objectives
The goal of the seminar will be to get an insight to the image and works of the songwritter as a phenomena of Czech culture. Students will not only work on certain of the author's texts but also reflection of his works in media (articles of different publicists). The participants will be also introduced to the main rules of the content analysis of media texts. At the end of the course students will acquire a brief knowledge on Karel Kryl's activities as an author of songs and poems and also as a persona, still present in Czech culture.
Syllabus
  • Students will examine the roots of Kryl's philosophy (i.e. personalism) and repeated themes reflecting his relation towards his nation and homeland (moral duties, ethics of responsibility, truth, memory). We will explore Kryl's activity in the area of politics and his definition of democracy. Students will also try to identify the values and expectations invoked towards Kryl and his work. They will answer, how mass media created the author's image during certain stages of his career (after the artist's death too), and also who (and to which extent) was the most involved in creating the perception of the public.
