Course objectives
The seminar will aim at problematizing traditional attitudes toward popular culture both in theory and practise.
Syllabus
  • Approximately two thirds of the number of seminars will be devoted to theory; the remaining one third will focus on primary sources.
  • In dealing with primary texts it is not possible to avoid literary history of popular genres while the main stress will be laid on fantastic literature (science-fiction: J.G.Ballard, fantasy: R.Holdstocka, cyberpunk: W.Gibson) and detective story (R.Chandler).
  • The theory of popular literature (culture) will be represented by short essays and studies by K.Čapek(from Marsyas), S.Sontag (from Against Interpretation and Other Essays), U.Eco, H.Arendt (from Between Past and Future), T.Todorov, C.Greenberg and M.Petříček (Majestát zákona).
