Course objectives
Thorough practice and deepening practical knowledge of Czech grammar, with an emphasis on practicing the declination systém and Czech conjugation through comparison with the student’s mother tongue. The aim is to make Czech grammar instinctive at B2 level in the CEFR and to develop and deepen it in spoken and written expression at C1 level in the CEFR. The ability to write a résumé of Czech texts. Mastering Czech and Latin linguistic terminology (creating one’s own terminological dictionary on the basis of one‘s mother tongue).
Learning outcomes
After completing the course the student will be able to:
- apply the acuired knowledge of Czech grammar in practical real-life communication, both oral and written;
- create a grammatically and lexically correct résumé on the basis of a written or spoken text (of an artistic or non-artistic character);
- identify and describe individual word classes and apply this knowledge in Czech-language communication;
- understand, use and subsequently explain aspects of grammar which were consolidated and analysed once more in the given period; compare the features of Czech grammar they studied with the grammar of their own language;
- use Czech and Latin terminology with no restrictions.
Syllabus
  • 1. The main focus in the lessons is placed on verbs (verb classes – aspectual pairs – transgressive phrases – reflexive and periphrastic passive).
  • 2. Declension of nouns (all genders and types, declension of nouns taken from foreign languages, proper nouns).
  • 3. Declension of adjectives: a/ hard- soft- possessive adjectives, b/ gradation of adjectives.
  • 4. Morphology of pronouns and numbers 5. Verb phrases (with and without prepositions, most common verbs (perfective, imperfective).
  • 6. Main problems in Czech syntax; word order (phrases, enclitics), coordination and determination (+ linking words), one-word sentences, direct and indirect speech.
  • 7. Knowledge of linguistic terminology.
  • 8. Practical exercises related to the above-listed features are linked to texts which the student uses in their practicing (the student also masters the preparation of a résumé of a text they have read).

Teaching methods
Classes led by the teacher (theoretical training), homework, completing exercises (oral and written), individual work, group work and self-study, a résumé prepared on the basis of a text which the student has read, correction exercises, ‘review lessons‘ – written progress tests.
Assessment methods
To complete the course it is necessary for the student to successfully fulfill the requirements of the closing written test and prepare a résumé of a text they have read. It is also necessary to abide by the following regulations: 1/ Attendance of lessons includes completing work set by the teacher (homework, in-class presentations etc.) Failure to complete this work (student’s lack of preparation) is counted as an absence. 2/ Students are not allowed to change groups, apart from in exceptional cases with the prior written permission of the teacher.
