Course objectives

Main objectives of the course are:
- deepening of the previous knowledge of the older literature;
- extending the scope of knowledge of relevant literature;
- enhancement of the reflection of the older literature in the interdisciplinary context;
- deepening of interpretative skills;
- application of acquired knowledge and skills in the creation of a scientific text and its defense in discussion

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course students should be able to:
- enlarge their knowledge of issues concerning early Czech literature;
- are familiar with specialized literature and methodology;
- check their interpretative skills;
- are familiar with basic findings and methodological procedures of related disciplines;
- are able to apply acquired knowledge and skills when creating scientific texts.
The contents of the seminars are readings and interpretations of the selected works, included in the period of old Czech literature. The particular texts are not more chosen with regards to the chronological aspect but more to the genre and the functional aspect. (A part of the seminar programme is devoted to the compulsory reading II).

• - St. Wenceslas legends and their significance;
• - medieval satire as an expression of new social relations, its genre representation, the so-called anti-woman satire;
• - satire and medieval anti-Semitism;
• - parodia sacra in the medieval literature;
• - Hynek of Podebrady – the Czech image of the Renaissance;
• - religious polemic and its genre diversity;
• - Renaissance travelogue;
• - other representative genres of literature of the epoch of the humanism and Renaissance;
• - Renaissance pessimism and its literary manifestations;
• - consolation in the works by Comenius;
• - Baroque art of legends, Jan Sarkander and his literary picture;
• - other representative genres of the Baroque literature;
• prof. Hashemi:
• - specific features of old Czech literature in comparison with modern literature (especially an allegoric approach to the representation of reality);
• - the Bible as a source and inspiration;
• - the genre system in Middle Ages;
• - Old Slavic literature and its specific features;
• - Kosmas' Chronicle;
• - love lyrics in the Middle Ages;
• - gallant epics in the Middle Ages;
• - satire in the Middle Ages;

Teaching methods

Work with texts (with the use of analytical-synthetic method) is emphasized in seminars. Interpretations of texts are realized as collective tasks in seminars and then checked in individually elaborated seminar works.

Assessment methods

The pre-requisite for taking an exam is the seminar work accepted by the teacher. Oral examination has the form of a discussion over the selected literary period.
