Course objectives
Lectures are concerned with the literature of the National revival era, as well as literature of the second half of the 19th century. It is an elementary course which introduces the first century of modern Czech literature with regards to its position in European (including Czech) history and culture and to its immanent character. Existing interpretations of the said field and literary age are regularly reflected upon. Correlation between encyclopedic knowledge and interpretations of literary works is emphasized.
The lectures will be dovoted to the key discourse formations of first half 19th-century Czech literature (especially Classicism, Romanticism) by using the synoptic-pulsative model of understanding the Czech literary history of the 19th century. We will focus on the specific features of the Czech literature of National Revival period on the background of European literary development; topics shall include periodization of literature, its function and its disputability in literary-historical syntheses, and syncretism of period movements and tendencies (Baroque, Classicism, Romanticism, Biedermeier and Realism). Formation of Revival myths, stereotypes, and auto-stereotypes and their meanings in 19th-century literary and cultural history, will be also taken into account.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the students should be able to:
- understand specific features of 19th-century Czech literature;
- to acquire its genre system;
- to compare it with the model of the modern literature;
- critically contemplate the interpretation of 19th century literature in various syntheses.
