Course objectives

The course is devoted to the deeper Czech literature of the first half of the 20th century. The emphasis will be put on contemporary literary historiography including the secondary literature from abroad and on imanent interpretation of literature as well as on interpretation in a cultural context.
Attention will be paid to issues which were considered as controversial or were not taken into account in last decades, such as decadence, symbolism, expresionism, Literary group, catholic authors, pragmatism, existencialism and ruralism.
Lessons are devoted to particular personalities, groups, movements and their mutual relations. The works are interpreted on the basis of comparative approach and literary theory.

Learning outcomes

After finishing the course students:
- understand to literary development in the broader cultural and social context;
- encompassment of deep analysis of particular works;
- acquire the methods of critical synthesis;
- intensify and broad knowledge in this field.

Syllabus

• The seminars will be aimed at analyses of particular literary works of this period in Czech literature. We will focus on the key works as well as on the works written by authors who are wrongfully neglected. We will think over the particular texts to consider also the literary, cultural and social contexts.
