This is a compulsory optional course intended for FULL TIME students who already have an intermediate/upper-intermediate knowledge of English (B2 level according to CEFR).

Course objectives
The aim of the course is to achieve the B2+ level (based on the Common European Framework of Reference) of English language competence. The focus is on argument, effective social discourse and on language awareness, which can also be interpreted as a new focus on discourse skills. This new degree of discourse competence shows itself in conversational management (co-operating strategies): give feedback on and follow up statements and inferences by other speakers and so help the development of the discussion; relate own contribution skilfully to those of other speakers. It is also apparent in relation to coherence/cohesion: use a variety of linking words efficiently to mark clearly the relationships between ideas; develop an argument systematically with appropriate highlighting of significant points, and relevant supporting ideas.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students will be able to: 1. prepare a brief podcast on a complex topic demanding a range of academic skills, creativity and critical thinking. 2. prepare a substantial podcast, eBook or video on a complex topic demanding a range of academic skills, creativity and critical thinking. 3. prepare a one-page written individual reflection on their learning experience. * All the above must be completed by the end of the first week of the Exam Period.

Teaching methods
Seminars focus on building discussion, debate, negotiatiion and presentation skills through class and teamwork, research skills through reading articles, listening to podcasts, watching videos, interviewing and making academic judgements. Writing and speaking skills focus on both approximate and precise language. Metacognitive skills are developed in all of the above as well as in the reflective writing at the end of the course.

The course assessment comprises: Active class participation 40% Brief podcast 10% Substantial podcast/eBook/video 40% Individual reflective writing 10% * All work must be completed by the end of the first week of the Exam Period.
