Course objectives
During the course, which represents the continuation of the course History of Ancient Greece I, the students will get acquainted with the specifics of Greek political, economic and cultural history in the classical and archaic periods. The course will as well focus on the historical development of Magna Graecia and Sicily and interactions between local Greek colonies and the neighbouring nations; the importance of Greek history for the cultural development of humanity will be evaluated.
Learning outcomes
The student will be able to:
- explain the causes and consequences of the basic evolutionary processes in Greece in the aforesaid periods;
- put forth the information stated in the basic historical sources for these periods;
- judge the importance of classical and Hellenistic Greek influence on the later European culture as well as the ancient development of the Near East, Central Asia and the western Mediterranean;
- describe how the civilizations of the Near East influenced Greece of the aforesaid periods.

  • 2) Greco-Persian wars.
  • 3) Relations between Athenian League and Spartan League.
  • 4) Causes of the crisis of poleis and the Peloponnesian war.
  • 5) Everyday life in the classical Greece.
  • 6) Greek historiography.
  • 7) + 8) Hellenism and its culture.
  • 9) The Greeks and the Roman empire.
  • 10) + 11) The beginning of the Antiquity in the western Mediterranean - the influence of Greek colonies, Carthage, Etruscans.
  • 12) The contribution of the Greeks to the global culture.

Teaching methods
Lectures and seminars with multimedia tools, questions of students, discussion, permanent comparison with evolution, analogies and diferences of Greek history and the history of the other ancient civilizations.
Assessment methods
Oral exam or written test on the same level. Besides of the history of the Greeks the exam contents always one question devoted to the relations of Greece to the "world of barbarians".

Information on completion of the course: Student ústně zodpovídá tři otázky, z nichž dvě se vždy týkají vlastní historie Řecka, jedna "barbarských" etniák, která přicházela do kontaktu s řeckým světem.
