Course objectives

In the seminar, students will get acquainted with the most important sources from the ancient Near East (including Egypt) and Greece. Different types of sources will be read: historians as well as legal sources or poetry.
The seminar will focus on working with sources on the example of specific topics (e. g. social tension in Archaic Greece illustrated by selected examples of the oldest lyric poetry, the origins of democracy in Athens, the comparison of Athenian policy during the period of the First and Second Athenian Empire etc.).

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course students will be able to search out sources for specific problems of ancient Near Eastern and Greek history independently and draw conclusions on the basis of their critical analysis.

Syllabus

• Mesopotamian codes of law and religious texts will be read as well as examples of the Egyptian sapiental literature. As for Greek history, selected texts of Greek historians as well as epigraphic sources and samples of the earliest poetry will be read.
• The selection of the sources is being partially changed each year.
