Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide the students with an overview of different methodological approaches that can be applied in treating the topic of the dissertation. Emphasis is put on the method suitable for a particular student or students. In the further course of his/her studies, the student deepens his/her knowledge of the method under the supervision of the tutor.
Furthermore, there usually 1 or 2 team-work seminars per semester; these consist in lectures of tutors and senior PhD students on particular cardinal methodological issues of Ancient History, which are discussed by all present.
Learning outcomes
After the completion of the course the student will be able to
• present different methodological approaches that can be applied in treating given topic
• justify the selection of the method that will be used
• name and explain the basics of the selected method
• he/she will be acquainted with the main methodological issues of the field and will be able to further ponder over them independently.

  • Team-work seminars.
  • Tutorial sessions over the methodological aspect of particular dissertations.
  • Individual students' work, pondering over the methodology of individual dissertations.

Teaching methods
The course has both the form of team-work seminars and individual tutorial sessions. A discussion over individual methods (their advantages and disadvantages, suitability for different topics etc.) is a part of the course, too.
Assessment methods
In order to gain credits, both active and passive participation in doctoral seminars and handing in a short description of the methodological approach to individual dissertation is required.
