Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide the students with a deeper level of knowledge of the Roman system of provincial administration than it is possible during the mandatory courses of Roman history; the discussed period of time spans from the time of gaining the first provinces under the Republic until the end of Antiquity. A due place is dedicated to the issue of the limes Romanus, too.
Learning outcomes
After the completion of the course the student will
- be able to explain the specifics of the Roman system of provincial administration under the Republic, the Principate and the Dominate
- learn to describe the advantages and problems of the Roman administrative system and to characterize its individual development phases
- be capable of explaining the nature of the border system of the Roman Empire (limes Romanus), its specifics in different parts of the Empire and in different time periods
Syllabus
  • Introduction, working with the map
  • Administration of provinces under the Republic: basic concepts, the emergence of first provinces and further acquisitions; the development of the administration up to the battle of Actium
  • The system of administration of provinces under the Principate; the territorial development of the Empire; the development of the relation provinces - Italy, the attitude of the emperors towards provinces
  • The system of administration of the Empire under the Dominate
  • The problem of Roman borders
