Course objectives
To provide students with instructions for methodically correct solutions of certain basic methodic issues of ancient history. To guide them in individual work under supervision to solve selected minor methodic problem areas. The students will be able to independently find and characterize various problems of historic development in antiquity and they will get acquainted with basic possibilities of their solution.
Syllabus
  • (Focusing on terms related to state and society)
  • 1) Definition of the general term "ancient state" and various types of states in antiquity
  • 2) Methodological issues of the transition from tribal society to state in ancient Near East and in Classical Antiquity
  • 3) Definition of the terms "chieftain", "king", "self-government", "magistrates"
  • 4) Definition of sacral government
  • 5) Characteristics of agrarian and nomadic states
  • 6) Work with sources containing constitutional terminology
  • 7) Methodological characterization of so-called barbarian states between Antiquity and Middle Ages
  • 8) Methodology of research of Early and Late Byzantine history
  • Students' papers on selected topics from methodology of ancient or "barbarian" states and Byzantine Empire can be presented in every lesson.

Teaching methods
Combination of methodological training to the lecturers, and supervised, individual solving of selected methodological issues by students. Discussion to all problems presented or discussed in the form of an essay.
Assessment methods
The credit will be granted for successful essay and participation in discussions.
