Course objectives
The students will be taught how to work with sources that:
- do not have a standard
- are damaged mechanically
- cause serious linguistic problems (e. g. for the errors of copyists, the existence of lacunae etc.)
The student will be able to better understand the critical apparatus in editions of sources and he/she will be instructed as how to decipher less understandable places in texts of sources written in Latin.
Syllabus
  • 1) Basic terminology of textual criticism, symbols and abbreviations
  • 2) Practical work with the critical apparatus of editions of classical sources
  • 3) Demonstrations of the text critical work on the text of Ammianus Marcellinus
  • 4) Demonstrations of the text critical work on the text of the Excerpta Valesiana and some inscriptions
  • 5) Demonstrations of this type of work on epistolographical and juristic sources
  • 6) Demonstrations on the texts of Byzantine and Hispanic chronicles
  • 7) Demonstrations on selected texts from the period between Antiquity and Middle Ages
  • 8) Work with prefaces of editions of Latin sources
  • 9) Assignnment of paragraphs (in Latin), which the students text critically comment, or also adjust

Colloquium or written test, in which the knowledge of theory and successful work with assigned paragraph of text will be examined.
