Course objectives
A series of lectures concentrates on the development of military and conflicts since Sumer to the early Rome. Gravity of interpretation is mainly focused on specific military campaigns, battles, and a description of historical military tactics and strategy. Students should get an overview of the most important battles and military clashes of ancient Greece and Macedonia in the reporting period of history, including the understanding of fundamental political and social contexts that directly related to the other studied wars.
Learning outcomes
The student will be able to orient himself in the political and military history of the ancient Middle East, Greece and Macedonia.

  • 3. Crete and Mycenae (the Trojan War)
  • 4. The hoplite reform, military ideals, wars between the Greeks (the Messenian Wars...)
  • 5. Greco-Persian Wars (Asia Minor, Marathon, the Persian military)
  • 6. Greco-Persian Wars (Thermopylae and Artemisium, Salamis, Mycale, Plataea)
  • 7. The Peloponnesian War
  • 8. The Spartan hegemony and expansion outside Greece (Lysander, Xenophon, Agesilaus II, the Corinthian War)
  • 9. The Theban hegemony and the rise of Macedonia (wars with Sparta, Epameinondas and military reforms, the Hieros Lochos, Philipp II of Macedon and his military reforms, Chaeronea)
  • 10. Alexander the Great (the Balkan campaign and the beginning of the Persian campaign)
  • 11. Alexander the Great (the battle of Gaugamela, Sogdiana, the battle of the river Hydaspes)
