Course objectives
At the end of the course student will be able to explain the evolution of European renaissance print, to understand the main graphical techniques, used in renaissance print, the work of important personalities, the functioning of renaissance workshops, the market strategies and the function of renaissance print.

  • Origins of European print, functioning of renaissance workshops
  • Book illustration and specialisation of the woodcut in the Northern Europe – Anton Korberger, Anton Kelb, Master ES, Martin Schongauer, Israhel van Meckenem
  • Italy – Competition with painting – Andrea Mantegna, Antonio Pollaiuolo
  • Origin of reproduction print – Raphael´s school – Marcantonio Raimondi, Agostino Veneziano, Marco Dente
  • Chiaroscuro woodcut – Ugo da Carpi and others
  • Cultivation of the woodcut in the Northern Europe – Albrecht Dürer
  • Lucas Cranach, Hans Burgmair, Albrecht Altdorfer, Jost de Necker
  • Specialisation of the market
  • Art experiments and collection pieces in renaissance print
