Prerequisites
The course is intended for students of master degree studies. Basic knowledge on history of European painting, especially of the early modern ceiling painting, is presupposed.
Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
The course is focused on the process of creating ceiling paintings and reconstructing the working methods used in the Central Europe, especially in the early modern period. The main materials and techniques will be introduced as well.
Learning outcomes
After finishing the course student should be able to:
Explain the basic terms (fresco, secco, fresco-secco, underdrawings, cartoons, spolvero etc.);
Describe the basic technics of the early modern wall painting;
Show a basic orientation in the literature concerning painting techniques and materials.
Syllabus
  • Techniques of ceiling paintings in the historical outline.
  • Restoration of ceiling paintings in the past, problems of the original state of ceiling paintings.
  • Implementation of ceiling paintings (preparatory sketches, cartoons, underdrawings, preparation of the grounds for paintings, plaster, pigments etc.)
  • Topics of this course are modified regarding artefacts and monuments available (especially restoration and renovation of wall paintings).
