Cíle předmětu
In July 1972 the prize-winning Pruitt-Igoe housing estate in St. Louis was demolished. Commonly seen as embodying the utopian ideals of modern art and architecture, its destruction was seen as a key turning point. In place of the utopian and critical stances of modernism and the avant-garde there emerged in the early 1970s a sceptical and fractured art world, in which art seemed to have lost its historical, political and cultural compass. This course examines the development of art during the 1970s and 1980s. It considers questions such as: Had modernism ended in this period? If so, what did that mean? Why critics talk about the period as marking the end of art? What was the relation between art and architecture and wider political events? The course will consider a wide range of examples from Europe and North America, but it will also explored the globalisation of contemporary art and the 'provincialising' of the Western art world.
Výstupy z učení
On successful completion of this course a student should be able to:
1. Demonstrate a clear knowledge of the principal artistic and architectural practices since the 1970s;
2. Situate the work of individual artists within the context of wider artistic developments during the period in question;
3. Understand the major theoretical and historical ideas that have been used to interpret the art and architecture of the 1970s and 1980s;
4. Employ such discourses in the interpretation and analysis of individual artworks and / or artists;
5. Demonstrate the ability to express themselves verbally and in writing;
6. Work independently to identity and select relevant visual and textual sources, using IT where appropriate.

  • The course will address the following topics:
  • 1. After modernism? The idea of postmodernism and the end of art;
  • 2. New figuration: the 'rediscovery' of painting in the 1970s;
  • 3. Complexity and contradiction: postmodernism in architecture;
  • 4. Memory, trauma, tradition: the return of history in art;
  • 5. Expanded fields: installation, video, photography, museum critique;
  • 6. Sexualities and the politics of race in art;
  • 7. Provincialising Europe: the discovery of global art.
