Prerequisites
The course presents luxury artifacts of the Renaissance in Baroque. Today we associate the art with painting, sculpture and architecture, yet luxury works of so-called applied art (like gold-work, splendid tapestries and textiles, ephemeral multimedia spectacles, ceremonial carriages and other opulent creations) were consistently more distinguished and celebrated by contemporaries. The exquisite craftmanship and the precious materials of these creations were signs of their owners rand and privilege. By contrast, the modest materials of painting and sculptures relegated them to lower status. The aim of lectures is to closely examine and interpret the objects themselves and their uses in their day, to analyse how sumptuous creations constructed the world and taste of Renaissance and Baroque patrons.

At the end of this course the student will be able to understand and explain meaning of the luxury artifacts at the early modern royal courts in their historical context.
