At the end of this course the student will be able to understand and explain meaning of works of art in their historical context
Syllabus
  • Catholic Reformation and the arts - religious orders and its visual strategy - visual culture - forms and function of works of art in monasteries (painting, sculpture, architecture) - specific iconology and iconography - monasteries and artists, work organization, monastic workshop, the process of creation of works of art, question of the involvement of orders - relationship between secular and spiritual power - baroque "historicisms" - prelates as patrons, art collectors and the customer
