Course objectives
The aim of this seminar series is to improve the reading skills and analyze dramatic texts (thematic and structural analysis of drama, generic classification etd.) and to interpret them. The assessment of the course will be based on seminar presentations.
Syllabus
  • This course is aimed to train the students in creative writing with a special view to the genre of the theatre review, which contains elements of science and poetry. A stress is laid on the philosophical and theoretical problems of critical thinking of contemporary theatre. The first part of the course is aimed at the refinement of critical language, argumentation, structuring thought and refinement of the genre. The second part centres on the reading of classical critical texts on/of theatre criticism. As a part of the course is the reflection of the critical methods and writings of important Czech critics of the 20th century, such as F. X. Šalda, J. Vodák, O. Fischer, A. M. Píša, M. Rutte, J. Grossman, S. Machonin, K. Kraus, Z. Hořínek, V. Just, E. Stehlíková and others.

Teaching methods
Every lecture requires homework preparation in reading the assigned study literature. After teacher's presentation of the general and particular features of the subject, students are guided to interpretation of the chosen extracts, and class discussions follow.
