Course objectives
The course will look at the genre of comedy of manners in the English dramatic tradition. It will provide an overview of its development from the Restoration to the twentieth century. We will read a number of plays in detail, focusing on such issues as style, speech, satire and social critique, genre specifications, gender stereotypes, metatheatre and many others. We will also consider a possible legacy of the genre in contemporary drama, theatre, film and popular culture.
