Course objectives
The course introduces students to the dramatic work of Tom Stoppard. We will read and analyse a number of his plays, starting with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, as well as identify and discuss key theoretical issues they raise in connection with intertextuality, metatheatre, use of dramatic genres, ideology and politics, science in drama etc. The course will also consider Stoppard's position within a broader historical and cultural context of the post-war British drama.
Syllabus
  • The following plays will be discussed: Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, The Real Inspector Hound, Jumpers, Travesties, The Real Thing, Hapgood, Arcadia.
