Prerequisites
Successful passing of a module "The Art of Reviewing and Criticism I" and ideally, "The Art of Reviewing and Criticism II", too. The module is intended for postgraduate (MA) students and also for undergraduate (BA) students in their final year. Max. number of students: 20.

Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to reflect questions on theory of theatre criticism. They will work with funtamental theoretical texts on theatre/art criticism, both Czech and foreign (mostly English). On the basis of their experience in reviewing and knowledge of secondary literature, students should be able to make reasoned opinions on making critical judgement. Students will improve their searching skills when working with bibliographical databases.

  • Reflection of basic Czech and foreign literature on theatre/art criticism.
  • Searching for texts on criticism in chosen periodicals.
  • Theoretical reflection of students´ reviews.
  • Discussions with theatre critics and theorists.

Teaching methods
Seminar in a form of class discussion, assisted interpretation of chosen texts following individual home reading.
Assessment methods
Upon successful completion of the module, students should complete demanded tasks (usually connected with the search for texts), actively participate during classes and timely submit an essay on secondary literature. Max. 2 absences are allowed.
