Course objectives
The course will make the student familiar with the basic procedures in critical research into iconographic documents of folk dress, its transformations and regional differentiation.
Learning outcomes
The student will be able to become well versed in basic iconographic sources, basic works on the theme, and applied methods. At the end of the course, the student will be able to identify the basic lines in the process of folk dress constitution in particular ethnographic areas of the Czech Republic, and he/she will acquire practical skills needful for the critical evaluation of iconographic sources.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction: basic terms and literature.
  • 2. Historical criticism of iconographic sources.
  • 3. The way of describing the depicted garments.
  • 4. Analysis of the depicted clothing based on the comparison with other depictions of folk and historical clothing, collection items and historical documents on constructions of cuts.
  • 5. Familiarization with iconographic documents on the regional form of folk dress in ethnographic areas of the Czech Republic.
  • 6. Practical section – search for and critical analysis, description and historical classification of folk dress from a chosen iconographic source.
