Course objectives
The course is aimed at the doctoral student to be well versed in the essence of contemporary problems that must be faced by the Eastern European area. It defines the main conflict problems, determines their historical nature and attempts at their historical and recent solutions. It also pays attention to religious issues and the role of churches in individual problems, deals with historical and recent relations between the countries of Eastern Europe, the view of Russian superpower policy on partial problematic periods in the past and present. not only Slavic but also non-Slavic (Baltic). It describes the experience of the communist period and the process of transformation of post-communist Eastern European countries and its reflection in literature and culture.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course the student will be able to: characterize the most important problems of Eastern Europe in the past and present; will know the historical nature of these problems; will be able to shed light on religious and ecclesiastical influences in Eastern Europe; will be able to explain the influence of communist ideology and on the political and cultural development of post-Soviet countries; will understand the ethnic issues in the Eastern European area; can clarify the basic problems of relations between post-Soviet Eastern European countries

  • Historical development of Eastern Europe. Russian superpower politics in the 18th and 19th centuries. State-forming myths of Eastern European countries. The role of Orthodoxy and Catholicism in Eastern European countries in the past and present. Communist development and its heritage in politics, literature and culture in general. Mutual relations of Slavic Eastern European countries. Relations between Russia and the Baltics. Ethnic problems of the post-Soviet Eastern European space. Conflict situation in the post-Soviet space (Ukraine, Moldova). Eastern European area and the European Union
