Course objectives
The aim of the course is to teach students how to apply textual analysis, preferably in combination with other methodological paradigms such as star studies, acting and performance studies and queer studies on selected films, sequences and other paratexts. Students will adopt skills necessary for identifying and discovering both explicit and implicit meanings in individual scenes, films and other media texts as well as analyzing ways of creating these messages. In the end students will be able not only reconstructing possible meanings of film texts but also considering them as part of a wider set of discourses.
Syllabus
  • Lecture 1 - Introduction to textual analysis - paradigms, methodologies and terms
  • Lecture 2 - The film Slovo dělá ženu as a loss of memory? - practical demonstration of working with textual analysis together with star studies and new film history methodologies (presented by lecturer).
  • Lecture 3 - 12 - presentations of individual students, followed by discussion over introduced issues, practical examples and arguments.

Teaching methods
These seminar sessions will start with introductory lecture, followed by practical demonstration of the working with the method provided by the lecturer herself. The following sessions will be dedicated to students' presentation. Students will introduce their masters thesis or part of it through a detailed analysis of a particular film, clip or shot. Textual analysis has to be accompanied by a methodological paper based on each student's choice and all attendants have to familiarize themselves with the reading. The topic and the name of the required reading chapter are to be announced a week prior to the presentation.
Assessment methods
The attendance at all the seminars is compulsory. Each student will present and choose. reading for the rest of the group once in the semester. Every student must familiarize himself/herself with the reading prior to the session in order to be ready for discussion. In the end, students are required to write a paper 15 to 20 pages long, which elaborates on the presented topic. This essay should be treated as part of the masters thesis as well as an individual paper ready for publishing in a specialized journal or volume.
