Course objectives
The survey course will focus on the history of Czech cinematography and on the trends of development in Czech film untill 1945. First we will define basic division of the cinema into periods and then we will concentrate od the typology of contemporary production: poetic film, psychological film, realistic film, historical film, pseudosocial film, film inspired by penny dreadfuls, film representing nationalism and cosmopolitanism, film avantgarde etc. We will also focus on the production of important filmmakers: Karel Anton, Gustav Machatý, Josef Rovenský, Martin Frič, Otakar Vávra etc. and personalities of Czech Cameraman School. Contemporary mass culture will be also part of our interest so that we will be able to analyze numerous films directed towards ,normal, audience.
