Course objectives
The course presents the specific aspect of the french literature and culture of the 19th century which is the developpement of the interest for the history and the past. The course is focused on the literary theory (the concepts of the fictional and historical narrative, their differences and the aspects of their analyse), but also on the problems of the historical literature. The different lessons are aimed on the most important approaches and types of the historical fiction and of the historiography of the 19th century. The course is separated into three part (introductional lessons - formes of the historical prose - historiography and her evolution) and will combine the lectures with the analysis of the concrete textes.
Learning outcomes
After this course, the students should increase their knowledge in the field of the literary science (especially the question of the fiction and her status) and of the french history and culture in the 19th century. The course could be used also as a complementary preparation for some parts of the final exam.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introductory theoretical lessons, fictional and historical narrative and the different approches to this probleme (Formalism, School of Prague and concept of the esthetical fonction, Mimetic theories, Theory of Fictional worlds) 2."Our century is the century of the History" (Gabriel Monod). Conditions of the devolopement of the interest for the history in the 19th century. French revolution and her heritage, Romantism and the new conception of the nation, Developement of the humanities. 3.Beginning of the historical novel and the new inspirations of the French literature. Madame de Staël and Chateaubriand. Foreign inspirations: Walter Scott and his reception, Fenimore J. Cooper. 4. Victor Hugo and his project of the historical novel with philosophical dimension. Notre-Dame de Paris, L’Homme qui rit 5. Balzac and historical novel. The Human comedy and reaction to the work of Walter Scott. 6. Roman-feuilleton: history in the popular and adventure novel. Alexandre Dumas: Three musketeeres, Queen Margot. 7. History face to face of the present. Romans of the Revoutional and literary image of the war of Vendée. Victor Hugo: Quatrevingt-treize, Honoré de Balzac: Les Chouans, Etienne Arago: Les Bleus et les Blancs, Barbey d’Aurevilly: L‘Ensocelée 8. Memories between the fiction and the history. Francois-René de Chateaubriand: Memoirs from Beyond the Grave 9. Birth of the scientific historiography and her mission. First generation of the historians - Guizot and "philosophical school", Thierry and "narrative history" 10. Jules Michelet and his History of France between historical science and "lyric epopee" 11. Positivism and path to the modern historiography. Hipollite Taine. Historiography of the Third republic. Ernest Lavisse a „roman national“ 12. Final lesson
