Course objectives
The course shows different approaches to the category of time in literary texts.
Syllabus
  • The course combines theoretical approach with analysis of concrete texts. Main problems treated: 1. Time in physical, bilogical and psychological meaning. Time in different cultures. 2. Expressing time: linguistic means, verbal tenses, adverbs, nouns, deixis, "temps du discours" and "temps du récit" in French(Benveniste, Genette, Maingueneau. 3. Time and narrator: Diderot, Balzac, Gide, Céline. 4. Time and space in the mythe and in the novel: Lévi-Strauss, Tournier. 5. Representing time: Proust. 6. Subjectivity and the representation of time: Le Clézio. 7. Time on stage: Ionesco, Beckett.

Teaching methods
Lecture: description of the literary field, explanation and definition of basic notions and their demonstration on concrete texts by concrete authors. Seminar: Application of the acquired theoretical knowledge on authentic texts. In the form of a presentation the students show their capability to connect their theoretical knowledge while working with a concrete text.
Assessment methods
Seminar paper - analysis of selected literary work in terms of temporality and narrative categories.
