Course objectives
The objective of the course is to allow the student, whatever his field of study: literature, linguistics or traductology: - to acquire the necessary methodological skills in order to write properly a French dissertation, as it is required in France. - to deepen the practice of academic writing - to reinforce his knowledge of the French language. This course is a first step to write a French thesis.
Learning outcomes
The student at the end of the course will be able to: - write a dissertation according to the method required in France. - to use his/her grammatical or scientific knowledge for this purpose. - to identify and summarize the information needed to answer a general question. - to write a fluid, coherent and logical argumentative text. In addition, the student will have practiced academic writing.
Syllabus
  • The themes of the course will be general topics, accessible to students and from the fiels of study of the students. For example, - reading - the usefulness of translations - translation and interpretation - literary genres - literary history - the different forms of language and their laws, - linguistic conformity, etc.

- class discussion - methodological exercices / homework - 4 dissertations during the semester
Assessment methods
Final exam: writing a dissertation in limited time. The student will choose one of the three proposed subjects. The subjects will be related to the course. The dissertations written during the semester may be integrated to the final grade.
