Course objectives
The course will have, to a lesser extent, the nature of a lecture, and, to a larger extent, of practical work: students will observe the development of translation methods on specific originals and their Czech translations. By doing so, students will get familiar with the development of their future field of specialization and with the rules of literary (or more generally - written) Czech.
Syllabus
  • The course will be divided into two parts: development of the translation before the WWII (even weeks) and after the WWII (uneven weeks).
  • Lessons concerning the period before the WWII:

  • The lessons concerning the post-war period will be focused on selected problems of translating French literary text into Czech, in context of wider cultural development in Czechoslovakia/the Czech Republic and in France. Reading of selected texts will be an important part of the study of the post-war translation.

Teaching methods

Assessment methods
An active participation in lessons (80%) is a condition for admission to the colloquium.

The colloquium will be composed of two parts: 1) essay 5-6 pages in French oriented on certain periods of the history of the Czech translation of a translation or a significant person; 2) verification of reading of compulsory texts. Condition for admission to the examination is active participation in lessons (80%).
