Course objectives
The course focuses on inter-war and post-war period of history of the central-european countries, in particular Austria, Hungary, Poland compared with the same period of Czechoslovakian history. Special attention is paid to the problems and the policies toward ethnic minorities and to the relations between states and non-ruling ethnic groups in general. At the end of this course, students should be able to understand and to explain the political development as well as the main trends of the social and economic changes of the region.
Syllabus
  • Defining of the Central Europe. Concepts of the central-europaen modern history
  • Peacemaking 1919-1922 and constitution of the new countries as the result of the WWI and dissolution of the Habsburg Monarchy.
  • Nation, nationality, nationalism. The question of ethnic minorities, mutual teritorial claims.
  • Political development, political systems and parties. Rising of totalitarianism. Dictatorship in Central Europe.
  • Economy development. The great economic depression and its results.
  • Foreign policy and mutual realtions of the central-european countries
  • The Central Europe during the WWII
  • Rising of communists power. Constitution and consolidation of the Soviet bloc.
