Course objectives

This course acquaints students with the current state of research as well as the relevant literature and sources attached to the history of Moravia in the “long” 19th century, and with selected issues on the development of Moravia aimed at particular trends in its position within the Czech lands and the Habsburg monarchy. The aim of this course is to provide a deeper knowledge of the provincial history of Moravia; to teach students the mutual relationship of geographically differentiated historical processes; to understand research methods into the relationship between the centre and periphery; to know how to analyse displays of regional and national identity, to recognise locally and nationally the multifaceted displays of national consciousness, parliamentarianism, the genesis of civil society, social differences, political participation and other significant developmental trends which are typical for the 19th century.

• The growth of provincial authorities and local government in Moravia and the tradition of a provincial awareness
• Provincial parliamentarianism and the Moravian provincial assembly
• The language question in Moravia
• The problem of national identity in the Moravian population
• Social and political differences in the Moravian population
• The possibilitis and limits of national conciliation in Moravia
• Country, state and nation in Czech and German politics in Moravia
• The development and significance of schooling in a nationally divided society
