Course objectives
Medieval Latin is a historic, cultural and linguistic phenomenon, continuing the old tradition of Latin language and literature of Classical Antiquity. The main objective of this course is to introduce advanced students of the Middle Ages to Medieval Latin language and literature. The course is divided in two parts. At the end of its first part, students should be able to explain development of Latin language from antiquity to the Middle Ages; to describe constitutive elements of Medieval Latin (Classical, Vulgar and Christian Latin); to characterize Medieval Latin morphology, syntax and vocabulary; to use dictionaries and other tools for translation of Medieval Latin texts; to apply grammatic rules to translating of sentences and easier texts from Medieval Latin into Czech.
Syllabus
  • Topics and chronology of Medieval Latin studies.
  • Dictionaries and other basic tools for the translation of Medieval Latin texts.
  • Constituent elements of Medieval Latin (Classical Latin, Vulgar Latin, Christian Latin).
  • Characteristics of Medieval Latin (phonetics, morphology, syntax, vocabulary).
  • Grammar exercises (conjunctive in main clauses, indicative and conjunctive subordinate clauses, infinitive constructions, ablative absolute, gerund, gerundive etc.).
  • Reading of easier Medieval Latin texts.
