Course objectives
The aim of this course is to acquaint the students with the history of the formation of the Orthodox Church, of its dogmatics, of the basic organizational forms and the relation with the secular authority in the Byzantine Empire. It will describe the development of this oekoumene until the year 1453. It will also deal with the missionary activity of the Byzantine Orthodx Church, the emergence of the national Orthodox Churches and the relationship between the Orthodox and Catholic Churches. Part of the lectures will devoted to Orthodox ecclesiastic art and the problems connected with it (iconoclasm and its consequences).
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- explain the history of the formation of the Orthodox Church, its dogmatics, the basic organizational forms and the relation with the secular authority in the Byzantine empire, its missionary activity
- identify the causes of the formation of the Byzantine oekoumene
- describe the development of this oekoumene until 1453
- identify the reasons of the formation of the national Orthodox Churches and the basic problems of their history
- formulate the specific development of “Orthodox Europe”
– describe the attempts to conclude an ecclesiastical union between the Orthodox and Catholic Churches and define the causes of their failures.
