Course objectives
The course is a methodological and historically philosophical insight into early modern history.The aim of the course is to describe and characterize the basic types and editions of sources, the most important Czech and foreign works (studies) and journals addicted to early modern history; define and explain the general terms and problems of early modern period; summarize the basic knowledge of the legal, administrative, economy and social history, as well as the results of the historical climatology, geography and demography. Students are also continuously prepared in the field of early modern paleography.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course the students are able to characterize the basic types and editions of the sources in the Early Modern History of the Czech Lands. Explain the perception of time and space and their transformation into individual social strata. Define and clarify the level and changes in the demographic, legal, administrative, economic and social conditions of the population of the Czech lands and compare them with the situation in (central) Europe.

  • Methodology, Czech and foreign historiography.
  • Types and editions of sources.
  • The early modern period (aspects, processes, chronology).
  • Time and space; territorial development of Czech lands.
  • Early modern man. Demography of Europe and Czech lands.
  • European society - social stratification.
  • Early modern legal system.
  • Administration – central authorities, lands, counties, local authorities (landlords, towns, villages).
  • Economy.
  • Piety.
  • Continuous reading and interpretation of an original (czech written) document, as well as analysis of edited early modern texts.
