Course objectives
The aim of the subject is to help students understand the field of history and reflect on the geographical context of the historical questions asked and master the practical skills of geographic methods on the supranational, national, regional and local levels.
Learning outcomes
The graduate will be able to describe the basic outlines of historical geography and topography as scientific fields and their current trends. He/she will be able orient himself/herself in the basic literature and acquire a practical synopsis in geographical and topographical guides and the skills necessary for their use. The graduate is also acquainted with the basic possibilities of the use of geographic and cartographic sources and their interpretation.
Syllabus
  • 1) Historical lands and state groups of Europe – general overview of the geographic complexes with and emphasis on the transformations of the significant geographical terms. Church historical geography
  • 2) Historical geograpy of Central Europe
  • 3) Historical geography of the Czech lands and Czechoslovakia. Development of the territorially administrative wholes within the Czech/Czechslovak state
  • 4) Historical and cultural regions, their perceptions and place in the cultural memory. National geography and its significance
  • 5) Historica; topography – topographical guides. Geographical and topographical sources. Historical map works
  • 6) Historical microspace. Towns and countryside
  • 7) The phenomenon of borders. The perception and function of borders, symbolic signifikance of borders and maps.
