Course objectives
To examine the countryside in the Czech lands and the circumstances faced by the serf population in the Early Modern Age, particularly in the 16th and 17th centuries. To describe the villages and their nearest surroundings, in particular the village home and its furnishings and dwellings with specific functions. To show a village’s social structure along with the methodological problems with research, as well as the size and make-up of the family. A summary of the basic information regarding the agricultural technology of the period. To explain the basic outline of the legal position of serfs with an emphasis on the issue of property, marriage, family and hereditary laws. To examine changes in living standards over time of individual groups of village inhabitants. To compare the perception of villagers by various social groups in society. By the end of the course students should be able to provide a survey of an Early Modern Age village and its inhabitants in the Czech lands.
Syllabus
  • Introduction, principle literature, definition of an Early Modern Age village
  • Principle sources for a history of the countryside and its inhabitants. Reading and interpreting selected sources (ongoing)
  • Outside and inside villages, the village house and agricultural buildings, dwellings with specific functions
  • Village demographic situations, family size and make-up; village social structure and methodological problems regarding research

  • Working days and holidays in the village: food, clothing, celebrations etc.
