Course objectives
This course focuses on everyday life in a medieval town in West and Middle Europe (with main emphasis on the situation in Bohemia and Moravia). Methodologically it is conceived according to the conception of historical anthropology, microhistory and Alltagsgeschichte in contrast to political history. A topical division is emphasized instead of classical linear perspective of political history – this point of view enables more complex overview and includes historical participants of all social classes. Main topics that will be outlined: formation and evolution of the towns in Europe and in Bohemia and Moravia, town and its architecture, law norms of the town´s life, structure of society, trade and crafts, markets, household in a medieval town, gender roles in medieval town, sexuality, education, taking care of a body, food and nutrition, medical care etc. Students should read and prepare to discuss all of the assigned readings for each lesson.

  • 3. appearance of medieval town (pattern of a town, architecture, housing, suburbs)
  • 4. life in a town and its normative system
  • 5. social structure of a medieval municipal society
  • 6. town businesses, crafts and markets, household as a primal entity of a municipal microcosm
  • 7. men/women and their coexistence within the municipal society (gender specificity of a human experience, possibilities of education, sexuality)
  • 8. body and body care (nutrition, clothing etc.)
  • 9. ecclesiastic institutions as a part of a town´s organism
  • 10. everyday life and its reflections in a contemporary literature
