Course objectives
The aim of the course is to give a general survey of Italian art. Student should be able to undestand and to acquire a basic knowledge of the Italian masters, of the regional art schools and styles. He should be able to know the different artistic productions in the right historical period and in the cultural context. Student should learn to describe an artwork with richest as possible an Italian technical vocabulary.
Syllabus
  • Italian Art and Culture in the 19th and early 20th century. 1.- The Italian landscapes and the “Capricci” of the late 18th century. 2.- The Neoclassicism in the Italian sculpture and poetry. 3 – The artistic group of Scapigliatura in Milan. 4 - The portrait of the Italian romantic artist. 5- The historical painting in the Resurgence: the battles and genre scenes. 6- The Italy's unification: the first national exhibitions. 7- The artistic group of the Macchiaioli in Florence. 8- The Italian artistic movements of the Divisionism and Symbolism. 9- The futuristic manifests and Marinetti´s poetry. 10 – The futuristic painting and sculpture by Balla and Boccioni. 11 - De Chirico’s "Metaphysic" and the "hermetic" poetry. 12 – The development of the Futurism in the post-war period: art, graphics, theatre and cuisine.

Teaching methods
The lessons are based on theoretical and linguistic preparation of the student and on the visual documentation of the italian pieces of art. The student is required to examine both the visual material of the artistic works and the critical texts contained in the bibliography.
Assessment methods
The exam is written and oral. The student will prepare a written critical dossier about an art piece which will be presented orally during the exam. The topic can be chosen from those presented during the course. Active participation in the lessons is strongly reccomended.
