Course objectives
The student will learn about different aspects of Italian linguistics, linguistic disciplines and the history of the Italian language.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will be able to understand linguistics and its disciplines, will be acquaint with the most important tools of the study of the language (dictionaries and encyclopedias), will understand the historical development of the language, its varieties, registers and Italian dialects. The lecture will introduce Italian linguistic terminology so that the student will be able to follow linguistic lectures taught in Italian in the consecutive courses.
Syllabus
  • - lingvistics and its disciplines - language studies (phonology, morphology, syntax, lexis) - lexicology and lexicography: the composition of Italian vocabulary, Italian dictionaries - semantics - dialectology: Italian dialects and their characteristics - historical development of Italian: Vulgar latin, the language question (la questione della lingua), the birth of modern standard Italian - sociolingvistics: composition of Italian, registers and varieties
