Course objectives
A succint survey of the history of Italian literature from its beginnings to the end of the 18th century, with stress on the main historical periods.
Syllabus
  • The core of the course consists in the explanation and discussion of texts by key writers from the very beginning to the end of the 18th century. Literary genres in the 13th century, Dante. Petrarca, Boccaccio and the 14th century. Poetry and prose during Humanism and Renaissance; Classicism, the codification of the literary language; Ariosto. The transition to Mannerism, Tasso. The Italian literary Baroque, Marino, the trends in theatre: commedia dell’arte, melodrama. Scientific and philosophical treatises. Literature in the period of the Academy of Arcadia. Vico’s philosophy. Theatre: Gozzi, Goldoni. The Age of Enlightenment.
