Course objectives
The aim of lectures is to introduce to the history of books. During the lectures will be introduced the history of book culture, the process of making books, the history of materials, as well as the history of libraries (book collections).
Learning outcomes
After the course, the student is able to: - orient himself in the history of book development - master techniques that are important for the creation of a book - get acquainted with the production and distribution of books - recognize different forms of documents
Syllabus
  • The aim of the lectures studies is the history of book culture. During the lectures will be introduced the history of materials (papyrus, parchment, paper), the history of book culture (from the Middle Ages until the 19th century), the process of making books (technology of printing). Further research focuses on the material and textual aspect of old books (manuscripts, incunabula, and ancient books) and their mutual relationship. Through the concrete examples, the books from the Moravian library will be presented production until the 19th century. The students will get to know various types and forms of documents or popular genres. Last but not least, we will also address the relationships between the author, the publisher, the printer and the bookseller, or the way books are distributed. Within the presentation of the history of book culture, more attention will be devoted to the development of book printing in the Czech lands, especially to the history of book printing in Moravia and Brno. The students will be also acquainted with the historical book collections and the library collections in the current institutes.
